Visual Art Exhibition 2007
Hlitawci Xiong, Edison High School
2007 Viva City Visual Art Exhibition
This exhibit c
elebrates the artistic achievements of students and provides a means of sharing those achievements with the public. The artwork
represents the breadth of the district art curriculum and attention to Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts. Citywide 100% of Minneapolis high schools provide visual arts instruction by art specialist teachers.
This year students participated in two invitationals, one sponsored by the Family Housing Fund of Minneapolis in which students were asked to focus their artworks around the question "What does home mean to me?" A grand prize scholarship was awarded and all other winners and participating students received gift certificates to Utrecht Art Supplies.
The Tracy Award is an annual visual arts competition with scholarship awards sponsored by Gary and JoAnn Fink of the
Louvre It or Leave It Gallery
, in downtown Minneapolis. This award is in honor of the Fink's daughter who passed away in an unbelted auto accident. These four winners will also have their work displayed at Achieve! Minneapolis for the next year.
See below for photos of all of the 2007 Viva City visual art pieces.
Student Artist Day
A new component of the Arts Festival this year was the Student Artist Day, held in conjunction with the Viva City Art Exhibition at the Minneapolis Central Library. On March 23, 2007 Viva City visual arts students had the opportunity to view the exhibition and interact with each other's artwork in a series of workshops led by university and college representatives. Workshop sessions included: "Is Art a Real Job?" presented by Gregory Rose, Inver Hills Community College, Art Faculty. "Meaning and Intentions" presented by Faith Clover, University of Minnesota Art Education Program Area Coordinator and Diane Katsiaficas, University of Minnesota, Professor, Department of Art. "Art in Public" presented by Judi Petkau. University of Minnesota, Youth and Tour Programs, Weisman Art Museum.
